  • What is Shot Blasting?

Shot Blasting, more commonly referred to as Sand Blasting, is an efficient cleaning method commonly used on solid surfaces like metals, stone, timber and more.

It can be used in a wide variety of applications to remove dirt, rust, graffiti, paint coatings and other spoilages. Shot Blasting is ideal for cleaning and refurbishing anything across the industrial, commercial and even domestic sectors. From full buildings to small metal components.

Our Shot Blasting service is one of the most effective methods of removing rust and other unwanted contaminants from metal surfaces, reliably removing coatings from both ferrous and non-ferrous objects.

  • How Shot Blasting Works

Shot Blasting utilises compressed air to propel abrasive media, known as shot, at high pressure. The abrasive media is fired at the target surface using a specialist nozzle to remove paint and other coatings from a variety of materials.

Common surfaces that are shot blasted include but are not limited to brickwork, timber, steel, iron, wood, concrete, glass, fibreglass and stone.

Our methods are a lot more forgiving to rusty steel, body filler and fibreglass repairs, unlike other cleaning methods like acid dipping, making it ideal for surfaces that may have had repair work in the past.

  • What can Shot Blasting be used for?

Steel, cast iron and other metals are some of the most popular materials to go through the shot blasting process. Due to the hard surface of most metals, shot blasting can clean or remove the outer layer of material without causing any damage.

Another popular application of shot blasting is on concrete. Commonly used in the preparation of factory and workshop flooring, where the power floated floor’s machine polish is removed and keyed so that epoxy resin floor paint can adhere properly.

Defects in the surface being shot blasted can easily identified once the process has been carried out. The abrasive media used can also smooth out any small surface defects ready for any further work. If a more serious defect is identified then shot blasting can be used to help level it out and then checked to see if it is not serious.

As previously mentioned, shot blasting is ideal for providing a profile on surfaces such as steel, ready for painting, ensuring the new coating adheres correctly. Keying the surface by shot blasting it allows paints and coatings to stick to the surface uniformly, creating a better final paint finish.

  • Sand Blasting vs Shot Blasting

The term Sand Blasting being used today is actually referring to the practice of Shot Blasting. The actual practice of Sand Blasting, using actual sand, was stopped in the UK as far back as 1949. Regardless, the practice of Shot Blasting is still widely known as Sand Blasting.

Sand Blasting has more or less been replaced by the term Shot Blasting, as a more up to date and accurate term. Sand created silica dust which was extremely hazardous when inhaled. Modern blasting medias are user friendly, eco-friendly and offer far less safety concerns.

In the past, sand used to be the go to material for any abrasive blasting work, this was due to how readily available it was. Silica dust from the sand is a health hazard when inhaled, so it creates a big challenge when used in industry from a health and safety point.

Modern abrasive medias have been developed which far outperform sand and offer a wider range of uses in multiple industries.  The safety benefits offered by these abrasives make them a more viable option within modern industry.

  • The Benefits of Shot Blasting

Shot Blasting effectively removes dirt, paint or rust from an object is often a very laborious job using manual removal methods. Shot blasting uses compressed air and a medium to remove these contaminants from a surface.

The process of shot blasting is much more forgiving on fibreglass and rusty metal surfaces. Less forgiving methods such as acid dipping can give devastating results on these types of surfaces.

All of the materials we use in our shot blasting process at Intercity are environmentally friendly. Other popular methods of coating removal, for example acid dipping, are considerably detrimental to the environment.

Shot blasting eliminates the need for any harsh chemicals or cleaning agents. The media is blasted at the surface, abrading away any dirt, grime, coatings or rust.
